Emily Phillis Lynde
Alice Rose and Walter Lucus Lynde’s youngest daughter was Emily Phillis, your grandmother, born in 1892. In many ways she was
like her older sister, Alice (my mother). They had the same sense of humour and happy nature and sounded uncannily alike when
they spoke. She married John Herman (Jack) Mager on 26th November 1919. He served in the 1st World War and had the rank of
Major when he left the army. They had two sons, Richard John Dobell (Dick) born 11th May 1921 and Thomas Edward Lynde born
20th December 1925. After the boys had grown up, Phillis and Jack bought a country Post Office which they ran happily until Jack
died in December 1958. After that Phillis lived with her son, Tom, whose marriage had broken up leaving him with three sons, so
Phillis looked after her three grandsons, Richard born 21.1.1948, Bruce born 21.4.1950 and David born 17.2.1953.

Photo taken in 1974 on my first trip back to England after 28 years away. Aunt Phillis
was then 82years old but it was quite uncanny how much she reminded me of my
mother who had died 30 years before. Her voice, laugh and mannerisms were so like
my mothers.

Office in East Witton
This photo was taken in 1978. Phillis had
suffered for years with glaucoma and by
this time she had very little sight left.
She died on 20th March 1980 a month
before her 88 birthday
